    Summary:
"CANE TASSELS, WORK WHISTLES AND LABOR DAY CARNIVALS is educational in documenting the day to day operations of a sugar mill, specifically Ewa Plantation. At the same time, it is also deeply personal in allowing us to relive experiences growing up there in the hopes of sharing this happy place with our children, grandchildren, and future generations. Although the memories recounted here are different, some hilarious, some cringe-worthy, some sweet, they all have one thing in common: nostalgia or "A sentimental longing or wistful longing for the past, typically for a place with happy personal associations" (Oxford Languages). Perhaps Joanne (Inouye) Ikemori said it best: 'Once we left Ewa for school or work, we began to realize what a great life we had on the plantation. It was truly EWA NO KA OI'"-- Inside back cover.
