After losing both her parents, Failan, a Chinese laundress, emigrates to South Korea seeking her only remaining relatives. She arrives only to discover that her relatives have moved to Canada. Desperate to stay and make a living in Korea, Failan is forced into an arranged marriage through a match-making agency. Kang Jae, a poor, aging gangster decides to marry Failan. Although she has only a picture of Kang Jae, Failan spends her days wishing that he would visit her. She often writes him letters but does not have the nerve to send them. Things take a turn when Kang Jae is asked by his boss to take the fall for a murder.
