Summary:
"Hiʻiaka-in-the-bosom-of-Pele is the youngest and most daring sister of Pele, goddess of the volcano. As the story opens, Pele sails with her clan from Kahiki in search of a home, finally settling in her fiery domain of Kīlauea Crater on Hawaiʻi. Pele lies down to sleep, and the sound of hula drums lures her spirit to Kauaʻi, where she awes the royal court, challenges the wicked moʻo women of Kalalau, and takes Chief Lohiʻau as her own. On wakening, she orders each of her younger sisters to find Lohiʻau and bring him back to Kīlauea but, one by one, they refuse. Only Hiʻiakaikapoliopele assents to her elder sister's request. Graced with a magical skirt and wielding supernatural powers, she and her companions make their way to Kauaʻi through dangers and ordeals, but on their arrival they find that Chief Lohiʻau is dead. Hiʻiaka must restore him to life and bring him back safely to the queen of fire. This grand adventure is a very human account of love and lust, jealousy and justice, with deities, demons, chiefs, and commoners throughout."--P. 4. of cover.
