Mark Twain began his career as a journalist. In 1866 he traveled to Hawaii and shared his observations in a series of letters published in the Sacramento Union. He provides a colorful account of old Honolulu, the island nobility, the City of Refuge on the Kona coast, and the active volcano of Kilauea.
