The journey made by the Five Civilized Tribes in the 1830s, known as the Trail of Tears, is one of the darkest episodes in the history of North America. This book tells the tragic story of Indian removal, when the U.S. government forced sixty thousand people in the southeastern part of the United States to leave their homes and move to Oklahoma. It explains how the coming of Europeans to North America led to the death of most of the Native people there; and it shows how the growth of a new nation devastated existing ones as white settlers took away Native lands.
