Summary:
Walter Johnson is the greatest pitcher of all time in the opinion of many. He was a star second to none. His playing career spanned the era of such early greats as Cy Young, Rube Waddell, and Willie Keeler to that of Lou Gehrig, lefty Grove, Jimmie Foxx, and Mickey Cochrane. In between it coincided with the giants whose names make up the roster of the game's Valhalla: Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, honus Wagner, Grover Cleveland Alexander, Tris Speaker, George Sisler, and others. But it wasn't Johnson's blazing fastball alone that placed him on a pedestal as high as any in American sports. It was Johnson who came to personify "gentlemanly conduct in the heat of battle," as Shirley Povich put it. For several generations it was the presence of Johnson and his ilk that consoled parents all over the country. If the game was good enough for the modest, decent, and honest Kansas farm boy, they figured, it was okay for their sons, too.
