    Summary:
No one would deny that the current generation of youth is deeply -- some would say totally -- involved with digital media. They text, tweet, socialize on Facebook or Skype, share photos on Instagram, and post videos on YouTube; they use apps to listen to music and play endless computer games. But not simply high-tech toys, apps are products of the digital revolution that have actually changed the way kids experience the world, creating a worrisome generation gap. Accordingly, developmental psychologists Howard Gardner and Katie Davis have dubbed today's young people the "App Generation," and in this book, they uncover how life for this generation differs from life before the digital era and explore the good and the bad of these technologies. The authors examine the impact of new technologies on three vital areas of adolescent life: identity, intimacy, and imagination. They discover what it means for kids to be "app-dependent" versus "app-enabled." They uncover not only the disturbing drawbacks of apps but also their striking benefits. There are currently over three million apps available to young people on their smartphones, iPads, and eReaders. The challenge for parents and educators is to encourage children and students to venture beyond the ways that apps are designed to be used.
