    Summary:
Speaking to Anne Salmond, Eruera Stirling ranges widely over his boyhood in the Bay of Plenty in the era of whaling, maize cropping and kumara growing. He discusses in detail concepts such as mana, tapu, matauranga and whakapapa, and explains the customs of rahui, taua and haka. In his later years, living with his wife Amiria in Auckland's Herne Bay, Eruera was a much respected figure in the Māori community.
