    Summary:
Hawaiian rainbow: Documentary about Hawaiian music and musicians. Author George S. Kanahele and University of Hawaii ethnomusicologist Ricardo D. Trimillos present the history of Hawaiian music from ancient chants through the development of the falsetto style of singing, the introduction of the ukulele and steel guitar, the rise and fall in popularity of hapa haole songs, and the cultural rebirth of the 1970s. Featured performers include slack key guitarists Raymond Kane and Billy Hew Len, singer Auntie Genoa Keawe, bandleader Andy Cummings, falsetto singers the Hoʻopiʻi Brothers, and Jerry Santos, Haunani Apoliona, kumu hula Vickey Holt Takamine, the Sam Bernard Trio, and the Makaha Sons of Niʻihau. Kumu hula explores the art of the hula and Hawaiian dance traditions, going back to when Polynesians first arrived in the islands, and passed on through the generations by kahuna (priests and sages) and kumu hula (master teachers).
