    Summary:
"On January 13, 1903, 109 Korean immigrants landed in Hawaiʻi, coming from their native land that was disrupted by Japanese colonialism. Joseon, or Korea, was not their country anymore, as the Japanese imperial army now occupied the land. Immigration from Korea began with these pioneers. More Koreans came in subsequent years, to the labor-starved plantations, through 1905, from coercion by the Japanese imperial government, Korean immigration ceased. Most of these immigrants worked on the plantation in Hawaiʻi, almost all of them had dreams of finally returning to their homeland but one that was free of Japanese colonialism. In Hawaiʻi with the geo-political situation preventing them from returning to their homeland, Koreans worked long hours. Although some of the laborers remained bachelors and died penniless, others married and had families. A new generation was born in Hawaiʻi, Korean but also local and American. From December 2005 to March 2006, twenty 2nd-generation Korean Americans whose parents were the first Koreans to immigrate to Hawaiʻi were interviewed for the purpose of a research project. These DVDs, the stories of the second generation of Korean Americans in Hawaiʻi, are a result of this project, which was sponsorred by the Center for Korean Studies and the University Research Council, both of the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa; the Hawaiʻi Council for the Humanities; and ʻŌlelo Community Media. The publication and distribution of this product is in part supported by a Core University Program for Korean Studies grant through the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Korea and the Korean Studies Promotion Service Service of the Academy of Korean Studies." -- Front Cover.
