Summary:
"Militaria From the Pacific War; Discovering Their Stories, has been five years in the making. Over this time the author has consulted with collectors, mined rare book shops and attended auctions in search of unusual items from the Pacific War to investigate. His 263 page book, in turn, relies upon these artifacts to explore the varying experiences, dangers, and privations of war as told from both American and Japanese perspectives. Summary for Chapter one.; 'Long Shadow at Nomonhan,' features the illustrated combat diary of Atsushi Takizawa. He bears witness to Japan's defeat at Nomonhan which caused its military planners to redirect Imperial ambitions southward, setting in motion events that led to the Pacific War. Chapter two; 'King Rat' is Cleon Stewart's first-hand account about life as a POW at Changi Prison. Stewart describes black market activities there and reveals his surprising connection to the character Sam King in James Clavell's famous novel 'King Rat.' Chapter three; 'USS McFarland AVD-14' is about a ship crippled by enemy dive bombers and the desperate attempt to save her. The story begins with a first hand account from Paul Helmke, the last surviving member of McFarland's crew. Chapter 4; 'Night Fighter' is a story that developed after the author acquired a cache of personal papers and militaria belonging to Brigadier General Frank Schwable, creator of VMF(N)-531, the first night fighter squadron in U.S. Military aviation history. It is a fascinating look into a little known chapter in Marine Corps aviation history. Next, five Marines make their way across the Pacific in '2nd Marine Division,' a story filled with first hand accounts and battlefield artifacts. All ten chapters feature artifacts brought back by the men who tell their stories. The 10.75 x 8 inch book has 80 color & 74 B & W photos and 12 maps. Also included as a bonus: a 40 minute DVD of newly discovered footage taken by Merrill Allen of the flag on top of Mt. Suribachi & other scenes."--Amazon.
