Ben Cartwright and his sons run their ranch, the Ponderosa, on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe and contribute to taming the wild West. Showdown: Bank robber Sam Kirby and his gang hide out on the Ponderosa. Sam gets a job as a ranchhand under an assumed name and Joe Cartwright gets suspicious of him. San Francisco holiday: At the end of the cattle drive in San Francisco two of Ben's drovers are shanghaied on a boat bound for Hong Kong and while Ben is searching for them he gets himself shanghaied. The mill: Tom Edwards holds Ben Cartwright reponsible for the accident that caused the loss of his legs. His hired hand, Ezekial is fueling this bitterness while cheating Tom out of his life savings. Escape to the Ponderosa: Sutton, Tyler, and Mertz, three army deserters take refuge on the Ponderosa, beating Little Joe senseless. The Cartwrights are outraged and join a military posse under the command of the relentless Captain Bolton.
