A consumptive, neither his squad commander nor the doctor at the military hospital want him around--food is too scarce. Sent away by both, Tamura wanders the countryside, falling in with different groups of soldiers, observing Filipino peasants lighting large, smoky bonfires in the countryside. Are they signal fires sent out to American soldiers or local guerrillas? Whatever their purpose, Tamura is reassured by the hopeful idea of the peasants continuing the ritual of their simple life, uncorrupted by ravages of war.
