    Summary:
Koji Ariyoshi lived a remarkable life at the center of events that transformed Hawaii, America, China, and the world. Born on a Kona coffee plantation, he worked as a stevedore in Honolulu and San Francisco, and was interned at Mazanar when the war broke out. Enlisting in the U.S. Army, his language skills led to an assignment which ultimately took him to Yenan, China. Later, he was involved in union activities and edited the "Honolulu Record," the voice of labor. Charged as a Communist in 1951, he was eventually acquitted, and later became a founder and champion for the University of Hawaii's Ethnic Studies and Oral History programs, and for state historic preservation.
