    Summary:
"Our knowledge of Hawaiian healing has been enriched from thirty years of discovering forgotten or lost documents, newspaper articles, and manuscripts, and their translation and publication. But the majority of these accumulated materials recorded the curiosity of how plant and other natural materials were used as medicine. This book, Kāhuna, focuses upon the priests and practitioners who developed and prescribed those treatments through prayer, ritual and medicines, and with as much information as can be found about them. The Rev. Dr. Malcolm Nāea Chun has put together a comprehensive story about the origins of Hawaiian medicinal kahuna to the modern day legalism that overshadows the practice today. He tells of how Hawaiians have responded to the health crises in ancient times, during the Kingdom and now in Statehood, using his translations of what appears to be the earliest account of Hawaiian kāhuna and medicine, the response of Hawaiian leaders to the devastating smallpox epidemic of the 1850s, and the lost records of the Territorial Board of Health. In each of these accounts, Dr. Chun provides as much information about the lives and witness of individuals of those periods for the first time"--Jacket.
