    Summary:
On May 1, 2011, Osama bin Laden, the mastermind behind the worst terrorist attacks on American soil and the founder of the Al Qaida terrorist network, was declared dead, killed by U.S. operatives in Pakistan after more than a decade of eluding their grasp. It was a symbolic moment, declared by world leaders a victorious turning point in the global war against terror. But a year later, Al Qaida's extremist zeal shows no sign of abating: the movement remains the CIA's "number one threat," with branches in Yemen, Somalia, and northern Africa, while the fear of "homegrown" jihadists grows.
