In Kalihi we say... is a collection of student work completed in the Language Awareness, Culture, and Education classes during the spring of 2001. As a partnership between Dole and Kalākaua Middle Schools and the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, Language Awareness, Culture, and Education classes were team taught by teachers from these respective schools. Together teachers helped the students achieve the following goals: to become researchers of languages and cultures, to improve literacy skills through meaningful activities which use critical thinking, to develop appreciation for cultures and languages in Hawaiʻi communities, to inform students and their parents about college options, and to improve students' awareness of themselves in society.
