Requests:  0 Summary:  "The Kawananakoa Satsuma vases: linking Japan and Hawai'i. Ed. illustrated: In about 1882, Emperor Meiji of Japan Mutsuhito (1852-1912) offered a diplomatic gift to King David Kalâkaua of Hawaii (1836-1891). The gift consisted of a pair of Satsuma vases decorated with four paintings, now part of the collection of the Marignoli Foundation of Montecorona di Spoleto. This type of vase, originally called Satsu-ma-yaki (lit. Satsuma ceramic), takes its name from the Japanese region of the same name located in the southern part of the island of Kyûshû. All the paintings on these vases depict scenes from a famous popular novel entitled Chinsetsu Yu miharizuki [Wonderful Story of the Bowed Moon], written by Takizawa Bakin and illustrated by Katsushika Hokusai, published in Japan in the late Edo period (1603-1868 ) in a woodcut volume belonging to the novel genre called yomihon (literally "books to read").
